During your visit, you will:
A sand dam is a reinforced concrete wall built across a seasonal river. During the rainy season, flowing water carries sand and sediment downstream. The heavier sand settles behind the dam while finer silt continues downstream. Over several rainy seasons, the accumulated sand stores large amounts of water within its pores, creating a natural underground reservoir.
Because the water is stored beneath the sand, it is protected from evaporation and contamination. Communities access this water through shallow wells, hand pumps, or protected water points throughout the year, providing a reliable source of clean water for domestic use, livestock, irrigation, and other productive activities.
Sand dams also recharge groundwater, reduce soil erosion, restore vegetation, improve biodiversity, and strengthen communities against the impacts of drought and climate change.
